ArrhythmiasA cardiac arrhythmia occurs when your heart beats too fast, too slow or beats irregularly. Arrhythmia can occur without you noticing them, and some are perfectly normal, others can cause loss of consciousness, Seizures, Cardiomyopathy or Sudden Adult Death Syndrome. An arrhythmia occurs when the normal electrical activity of the heart is disturbed. Normally, tiny amounts of electricity cause the top part of the heart (the atriums) to contract. About a sixth of a second later more electrical activity causes the bottom part of the heart (the ventricles) to contract The ventricles are the main muscular chambers that pump blood around the body. When the heart beats too fast it is called a ‘tachyarrhythmia’. When the heart goes too slow, it is referred to as a ‘bradyarrhythmia’.
